Air Express vs Sea Express: Which Should You Choose?
- Air express: 3–7 days door-to-door, premium rates, best under ~30 kg.
- Sea express: 25–35 days door-to-door, per-kg cost often 5–10× lower.
- Break-even between the two usually falls between 30 and 80 kg.
- Bulky cargo pays on volumetric weight (cm³ ÷ 5,000) by air — check before quoting.
Air express delivers 5–30 kg parcels in 3–7 days door-to-door at premium rates; sea express moves larger shipments door-to-door in 25–35 days at a fraction of the cost. The right choice depends on weight, urgency, and your margin.
The Two Modes Compared
| Factor | Air express (courier style) | Sea express (DDP door-to-door) |
|---|---|---|
| Transit, China → US (door to door) | 3–7 days | 25–35 days |
| Typical all-in price, 10 kg | $85–130 | $40–70 |
| Typical all-in price, 100 kg | $550–800 | $110–180 |
| Chargeable weight basis | Actual vs volumetric (÷5,000) | Actual weight or CBM |
| Best for | Samples, urgent refills, high-value small items | E-commerce restocks, wholesale orders |
Air cargo capacity and pricing follow patterns described by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), which is also the source for dangerous goods rules that restrict what air express can carry — batteries, liquids and aerosols face limits at sea too, but milder ones.
Watch the Volumetric Weight Trap
Air express charges the greater of actual or volumetric weight — length × width × height in cm divided by 5,000. A carton of 4 kg pillows measuring 60×50×40 cm calculates as 24 kg chargeable. On sea express, the same carton occupies 0.12 CBM and prices far more gently. Our air freight volumetric weight guide shows the full math, and our CBM formula guide covers the sea side.
A Simple Decision Rule
- Under ~30 kg and urgent: air express. The speed premium is small in absolute dollars.
- 30–80 kg: quote both. Break-even shifts weekly with air rates.
- Over ~80–100 kg and not urgent: sea express, typically 5–10× cheaper per kilogram.
An e-commerce client of ours ships phone accessories weekly: 22 kg trial orders go air express in five days, while their 300 kg restocks travel sea express at roughly one-seventh the per-kg cost. Blending Both: The Split-Shipment Play
You don't have to choose one mode for the whole order. A common pattern we run for e-commerce sellers: fly 10–20% of the shipment by air express to cover the first two weeks of sales, and send the remaining 80–90% by sea express to arrive just as the air stock runs down. The blended cost stays far below full-air freight, while the store never goes out of stock. The math works best when the sea leg is DDP door-to-door — one party handles customs on both parcels, and your only task is timing the two departures roughly two to three weeks apart. For new product launches we often go further: a tiny air-express sample batch for photography and listing setup, a mid-size air batch for the launch window, and the volume restock entirely by sea.
Two Compliance Notes Before You Book
First, restricted goods: air express enforces strict rules on lithium batteries, liquids, powders and magnets, and undeclared battery cargo is the most common reason parcels get detained or returned at origin. Sea express handles the same categories more flexibly, though batteries still need proper DG declaration on ocean too. Second, duties: air express delivers DDU by default with the broker collecting duties on delivery, while our sea express runs DDP door-to-door with duties prepaid — no surprise brokerage invoice at your warehouse. If your product contains any battery, magnet or liquid, tell us at the quote stage; the answer changes both the mode and the paperwork.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between air express and sea express?
Air express moves parcels by air through integrator networks in 3–7 days door-to-door at premium per-kg rates. Sea express consolidates cargo in containers and trucks it to your door in 25–35 days at a fraction of the cost, with far cheaper rates per kilogram.
At what weight is sea express cheaper than air express?
The break-even usually sits between 30 kg and 80 kg depending on lane and volumetric weight. Under about 30 kg, air express is often the best value once speed is considered. Above 80–100 kg, sea express wins on cost in almost every case where the buyer can wait 3–5 weeks.
How is air express chargeable weight calculated?
Air express uses volumetric weight: length × width × height in centimeters divided by 5,000 for courier services. You are charged on the greater of actual or volumetric weight, so bulky light items can cost far more than their scale weight suggests.
Is sea express door-to-door like a courier?
Yes. Sea express covers pickup in China, ocean consolidation, destination customs and final truck delivery, typically with duties handled under DDP terms. It feels like a courier but moves at ocean speed.
